The main MOTIVATION for the openMOS project is greater agility for the European manufacturing industry.
While automated systems are looking to achieve high productivity and quality requirements, their sensitivity to change is increasingly becoming a bottleneck to a substantial reduction in batch sizes and more frequent production changes.
The VISION of the project is to allow the full economic sustainability of the production systems, based on modular and intelligent plug-and-produce equipment.
To achieve this, the project focuses on three main innovation elements:
incorporate plug-and-produce functionality into automation devices, robots and machines
enabling vertical and horizontal connectivity between plug-and-produce automation components with superior control and business functions
creation of a production operating system (Manufacturing Operation System, extendable and adaptable MOS), which allows the easy introduction of new products, work orders and modifications to production equipment, and it allows for easy implementation of production change optimization and management strategies.
Targeted INNOVATION is an openly accessible plug-and-produce system platform, which allows all participants in the automation system value chain to come together to develop and leverage solutions together.
Thus, the project proposes the integration of well-established plug-and-produce system concepts from many years of research in this area, into industry-relevant technology platforms that have emerged in recent years.
Since the majority of component/device/machine manufacturers and system integrators are SMEs, plug-and-produce can only be achieved by placing specific requirements for frontline SMEs: solutions close to and for SMEs.
The R & D approach is guided by proposed industrial scenarios and implementations in pilot cases, which are conducted to systematically verify and validate the readiness of target results in three key industrial sectors: consumer goods, automotive and electronics.
